Mission Espada was founded in 1690 as San Francisco de los Tejas. It is the oldest of the East Texas missions and was moved to the San Antonio River area in 1731 and renamed Mission San Francisco de la Espada.
Below are living quarters, so you are not allowed to walk up near that hallway.

Some say the broken arch over the Mission Espada doorway is a builder's mistake, but many find beauty in how it inverts the line you expect.
The inside of these missions are magnificent.
Espada looks nearly as remote now as it did in the mid-1700s (not that I'm old enough to know that for sure, but I read it in the pamphlet).
